AWAKENINGS BROUGHT A TECHNO LOVE-IN TO VALENTINE’S DAY IN NEW YORK

In Amsterdam, the Awakenings festival is something of a rite of passage for techno heads. The event’s balance of leading DJs and superior production is something the American techno scene has marveled at, and largely lacked, for years.

As such, the bar was high for Awakenings’ first-ever standalone stateside event. Many in attendance had heard about their infamous shows at Amsterdam’s former industrial warehouse venue Gashouder and their annual festival weekender outside the city, while others were drawn in by the DJ lineup headed by Adam Beyer and Nicole Moudaber.

Sunday’s sub-zero temperatures, along with the weekend’s other big events—three sold-out Eric Prydz shows at Terminal 5, plus Valentine’s Day—didn’t stop Awakenings from packing out. The crowd wore more black then red, but it was still a perfect setting in which to celebrate a mutual affection for deep, dark, drum-heavy techno.
